Kaushal Buch (Senior Member 2019) received B.E. (Electronics and Communication) from Gujarat University (Nirma Institute of Technology) in 2004 and M.Tech (Research) from S.V. National Institute of Technology, Surat in 2013. He has 15 years of professional experience in the areas of digital system design, implementation of signal processing algorithms, and data analysis. In the initial phase of his career, he worked on System-on-Chip designs, development and verification of Intellectual Property (IP) core for various digital subsystems. Subsequently, he has been working on the development and commissioning of interference mitigation techniques, real-time signal processing, inteferometric data analysis, and focal plane array beamforming system for a radio telescope.
Currently, he is working as Senior Engineer (Backend Systems) at the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, TIFR, Pune, India. In the last decade, he has worked on interference mitigation algorithms for the GMRT and its effects on astronomical imaging/data. He has developed real-time signal processing techniques for mitigating radio frequency interference (RFI) in passive radiometers and interferometers. These algorithms are being used during GMRT observations for imaging extended radio sources and pulsars. His current focus is towards interferometric data analysis and understanding the effects of real-time RFI excision on radio interferometer and time-domain astronomy data. He is working for the Upgraded GMRT and Expanded GMRT plan proposals and is a co-investigator in upcoming versions of these proposals.
His professional work has been published in the form of papers in peer-reviewed journals and contributed/invited talks at national and international conferences. He served as the lead issue editor for a special issue on interference mitigation techniques for radio astronomy (Journal for Astronomical Instrumentation, March 2019). He has been involved with the Commission-E (Electromagnetic Environment and Interference) of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) for its activities at the national level. Recently, he was invited with a travel grant award to deliver a talk on the radio astronomy perspective of RFI mitigation at the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) 2019, Yokohama, Japan.
Kaushal Buch is a Member of the IEEE Frequency Allocation in Remote Sensing (FARS) committee, Senior Member of URSI, Member of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE-India) and Life Member of the Indian Society for Remote Sensing (ISRS).
